Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is a freshwater lake located in southeastern Africa. It is the third-largest lake in Africa and the ninth largest in the world, with a total surface area of 29,600 square kilometers. The lake is surrounded by Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique and is part of the Great Rift Valley.
The Malawi Lake map shows that the lake is elongated and narrow, stretching approximately 560 km from north to south and 75 km from east to west at its widest point. The lake's depth varies from 220 meters in the north to 706 meters in the south, with an average depth of 292 meters. The lake is fed by several rivers, with the Shire River being the largest and the only outlet.
The lake is home to more than 1,000 species of fish, many of which are unique to the lake. It is a popular destination for tourists, particularly for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. The lake also provides an important source of livelihood and food for many people living along its shores, with fishing being the main economic activity. However, overfishing and pollution remain significant challenges facing the lake's sustainability.
